Azerbaijani FM holds high-level talks in New York

Azerbaijan's foreign minister and U.S. State department official have focused on the issues related to the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict during their meeting on September 25.

The negotiations between Elmar Mammadyarov and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland took place on the on the sidelines of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The sides also discussed the U.S.-Azerbaijani relations and its further development, regional and international issues.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since a lengthy war in the early 1990s that displaced over one million Azerbaijanis, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions.

Mammadyarov also met with Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Zarar Ahmad Osmani and leader of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Dervish Eroglou on the sidelines of UN General Assembly on September 25.

During the meeting between Mammadyarov and Osmani, the sides praised the current development of relations between Azerbaijan and Afghanistan.

The sides exchanged views on the projects implemented in the region on the initiative and with participation of Azerbaijan and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project.

Osmani voiced his country's interest in gaining access to this corridor.

The ministers also discussed expanding the legal framework between the two countries, Azerbaijan's involvement in the infrastructure projects in Afghanistan and issues of cooperation within international organizations.
