Group of criminals detained in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan's National Security Ministry arrested 26 residents of the country after operatively-search activities.

They were detained on suspicion of creating illegal armed formations and groups, and participating in their activities, providing weapons, ammunition, explosives, military equipment, as well as on attracting minors to commit violent crimes and other actions, the ministry reported.

The individuals were accused of criminal actions and arrested after court decisions.

Some of the arrested persons have been involved in illegal actions to create armed formations in different countries, including Pakistan, Iran and Syria.

Azerbaijan's Criminal Code envisages 20 years in imprisonment or life sentence for creating illegal armed formations and groups, and participating in their activities, providing weapons, ammunition, explosives, military equipment; for death of the people as a result of terrorism, i.e., for intention to affect the decisions adopted by the international organizations and governmental bodies, damaging the human health, committing explosions, incendiarism and other activities creating danger with significant damage to properties and other socially dangerous consequences, as well as for blackmailing, for attracting stateless residents of Azerbaijan to armed conflicts beyond the borders of the country under the guise of performing religious rites or motivated by religious hatred, having military training and creating permanent groups with this purpose, heading that groups, committing illegal actions, including joining that groups, training or armed conflicts.
