Religious leaders call for peaceful settling of conflicts

Azerbaijani and Georgian religious leaders have called for a peaceful resolution of the conflicts in Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region.

Chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Office Sheikh-ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazade and Catholicos Patriarch of all Georgia Ilia II made the remark at a meeting in Georgian capital, Tibilisi on August 29.

"We are deeply concerned by the conflicts in Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Nagorno-Karabakh, which hinder the development of the region, and the peaceful coexistence of nations. We stand for a peaceful and just resolution of these conflicts, which will make our nations even closer and will allow them to freely develop," Ilia II said.

Pashazade, for his part, noted the need to resolve the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict peacefully.

"After that, our nations will become even closer," he said.

Pashazade further said the friendship of Georgian and Azerbaijani nations is a good example for other countries of the world.

Pashazade started his two-day visit to Georgia on August 29. The chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Office traveled to Georgia on a friendly visit and to celebrate his 65th birthday there. Catholicos Patriarch of all Georgia Ilia II welcomed Pashazade at the Tbilisi airport.

"I am happy to see you again, because our relations have been characterized with warmth and friendship, our peoples have done and still do a lot for each other, primarily to ensure the territorial integrity of our countries," Pashazade said.

He also conveyed Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's greeting to Ilia II.

Catholicos Patriarch of all Georgia, in turn, congratulated Pashazadeon his 65th birthday and called him a friend of the Georgian people.

Pashazade is also scheduled to hold meetings with the Georgian president and the parliament speaker during his visit.

His visit to Georgia will wrap up on 30 August.
