Baku, Kabul focus on border security

Azerbaijani and Afghan officials discussed border security issues in Baku on August 20.

Chief of the State Border Service of Azerbaijan, Colonel-General Elchin Guliyev has received Afghan delegation led by Commander of the Border Police of the Afghan Interior Ministry, Lieutenant-General Mohammad Shafiq Fazlini.

Fazlini visited Azerbaijan to participate in the solemn ceremony dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the Border Troops of Azerbaijan on the invitation of Guliyev, the State Border Service (SBS) said.

Azerbaijani and Afghan delegations headed by Guliyev and Fazlini held a meeting in enlarged format.

The sides focused on issues of border security, improvement of measures for the protection of the state borders, the achievements and prospects of cooperation, as well as the other issues of mutual interest.

During the discussions the importance of expanding of bilateral relations was stressed for participation of employees of the Border Police of Afghanistan in a long training, as well as in a variety of courses at the Academy of SBS.

Afghanistan recognized the independence of Azerbaijan on December 21, 1991. The diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on November 16, 1994. Azerbaijani ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is concurrently accredited to Afghanistan. The embassy of Afghanistan to Azerbaijan was opened in November, 2012.
