Int’l community should penalize Armenia over its aggressive policy

An Azerbaijan MP has called on the international community to impose severe sanctions against Armenia over its aggressive policy.

Fazail Agamali told Trend on August 4 that the provocations committed by Armenians on the frontline show that the double standards of the international community have not changed.

He noted that the OSCE Minsk Group just urges the parties to reach a peaceful settlement but no one condemns Armenia for its aggressive policy.

Agamali pointed to the double standards, saying the aggressor Armenia and Azerbaijan, which the subject of aggression are viewed equally.

"Of course, this is regrettable. Russia is subjected to serious penalties in connection with Ukraine's events. Armenia has held Azerbaijani land under occupation for more than 20 years. The UN Security Council passed four resolutions on unconditional withdrawal of Armenian forces from the occupied territories. Why it does not impose sanctions on Armenia? This means that there are double standards in the world. The recent events show that no changes have been made in this sphere," Agamali said.

He stressed that, despite all this, Armenia received a heavy blow from Azerbaijan in response to its provocation and was reminded of the country's military strength.

"That's why, Armenia has appealed to the OSCE Minsk Group, certain organizations and even the U.S. president. It is trying to suspend Azerbaijan's response to its provocations. It has realized that it is in a hopeless situation," Agamali said.

He noted that on the one hand, Armenia calls for stopping the battle but on the other hand, it continues making provocations. "This shows a dual policy."

Armenia escalated tensions on the border areas from July 31 to August 1, when reconnaissance and sabotage groups tried to cross the contact line of the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops through the territories of Aghdam and Terter regions. They also attacked the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces on the night of August 1-2.

Thirteen Azerbaijani servicemen were killed and several others injured during the clashes between two sides.

Despite what is said by Armenian sources, they suffered more losses. However, the Armenian leadership tries to keep the number of losses in secret to keep calm its public opinion.

Agamali further said the Azerbaijani army has demonstrated its strength and invincibility over the past few days, adding that this has become a serious lesson for Armenia.

"If Armenia continues acting in the same manner, it will get heavier blows from Azerbaijan. There is no doubt. A rigid military and diplomatic position, demonstrated by Azerbaijan must continue until the end. Armenia must face the need to withdraw from the occupied territories," he underlined.

Armenia occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, after laying territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor that had caused a lengthy war in the early 1990s.

The UN Security Council has adopted four resolutions on Armenia's withdrawal from the Azerbaijani territory, but they have not been enforced to this day.

Peace talks mediated by Russia, France and the U.S. have produced no results so far.
