Armenian troops keep high tension on contact line

Over the past 24 hours, Armenian armed forces violated the ceasefire with Azerbaijan 24 times in several directions of the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported on July 23.

Armenian Armed Forces opened fire at the Azerbaijani side at the positions of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces located in the village of Kohanebi of Tovuz region from the positions, located in the Chinari village of Armenia`s Berd region.

Azerbaijani Armed Forces also were fired from the positions located at the nameless heights and near the villages of Yusifjanly, Shikhlar, Merzili of Aghdam region, Ashagi Veyselli, Horadiz of Fizuli region, Chayli village of Terter region and Mehdili village of Jabrayil region.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four U.N. Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
