Tension on contact line of Armenian and Azerbaijani troops remains
Armenian Armed Forces broke ceasefire with Azerbaijani side in
numerous directions 28 times over the past day, the Azerbaijani
Defense Ministry reported on April 17.
The armed forces of Armenia, located in the village of Berkaber of
Armenia's Ijevan region, opened fire at the positions of
Azerbaijani Armed Forces located in the village of Gizilhajili of
Gazakh region last night.
The armed forces of Azerbaijan, located in the village of Alibeyli
of Tovuz region and Gaymagli of Gazakh region, went under fire by
the Armenian armed forces located in the villages of Mosesgerh and
Aygepar of Armenia's Berd region.
Also, the Azerbaijani positions took fire from the positions
located near the villages of Gorgan, Horadiz of Fizuli region,
Sarijali, Novruzlu, Yusifjanli of Aghdam, Chilaburt of Terter,
Mehdili of Jabrayil, Kuropatkino of Khojavend and Tapgaragoyunlu of
Goranboy region.
The Armenians were silenced with a retail fire, the ministry
said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
