Azerbaijan believes in rapid settlement of the situation in Ukraine and stabilization of the political and economic situation in that country.

Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Ukraine, Eynulla Madatli made the remarks at the meeting with Ukraine's First Deputy Foreign Minister Natalia Galibarenko on April 16.

Galibarenko thanked Azerbaijan for supporting of the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty during the voting at the UN Security Council for a resolution on developments in Ukraine.

She noted that Ukraine, despite the crisis, intends to further develop cooperation with Azerbaijan.

The parties also discussed specific issues of bilateral cooperation and agreed to continue joint projects.

A change of power took place in Ukraine on February 22. The Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) ousted President Viktor Yanukovych from power, changed the constitution and scheduled presidential elections for May 25.

A number of provinces in eastern and southern Ukraine, as well as the Crimea did not recognize the legitimacy of the Rada and decided to hold a referendum on the future of the regions.

The vast majority of residents of Crimea - 96 percent - voted to secede from Ukraine and rejoin Russia, in a referendum held March 16.

On March 18, Russia and Crimea signed an agreement on Crimea as well as Sevastopol city joining the Russian Federation.

Azerbaijan repeatedly voiced that it stands for peaceful resolution of the crisis in Ukraine.

Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov earlier said Azerbaijan calls for solution to the problem within the framework of Ukraine's constitution, and also supports respect towards international principles, and in particular the principle of territorial integrity.
