Pre-election situation in Azerbaijan mulled  at parliament

Azerbaijani Parliamentary Speaker Ogtay Asadov met members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Special Committee`s pre-election mission for monitoring of presidential election in Azerbaijan led by Robert Walter on Sept.12,AzerTag state news agency reported.

Asadov praised participation of the PACE Special Committee in monitoring of the presidential election to be held on Oct.9.

He said there was favourable legal framework to hold democratic presidential election in the country.

Asadov said mission by a number of international organizations, including the Council of Europe, would observe the presidential election.

Walter, in turn, said their mission included said 30 monitors.

Praising the Azerbaijan-Council of Europe relations, Walter stressed the importance of Azerbaijan`s upcoming chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

According to the Constitution, the President of Azerbaijan is elected for a five-year term through general, direct and equal elections, by free, private and secret voting.

Azerbaijani citizens who have the right of election, initiative groups of electors, political parties and blocs of political parties are entitled to nominating candidates.

According to the electoral law, the official election campaign will begin 23 days before the election. It will take place from September 16 until 18:00 on October 8 and only by those authorized for such activity as stipulated by the domestic legislation and in compliance with the pertinent rules.
