Azerbaijani ID card coverage to expand

The number of countries where you can travel with an Azerbaijani ID will be expanded. Negotiations are underway with the relevant authorities of several countries, the Economic Development Ministry told Trend news agency on Friday.

According to the ministry, amendments were made to the legislation for ID cards to be used for exit and entry to the country, with which international agreements have been signed.

"The list of countries where you can travel with the ID card will be made public after the completion of the work in this direction," the ministry said.

The ministry reported that the issue of Identity cards of the new model, will start from January 1 2014, and civil, service and diplomatic passports in June 2013.

Along with this, the passports issued before June 1 2013 and identification cards issued by January 2014, will remain in force until they expire.

The Justice Ministry told Trend news agency that the infrastructure for the issuance of biometric passports is completely ready.

There will be two types of biometrics - fingerprints and biometric recognition face geometry - which will be displayed in an electronic chip ID cards and passports.

These figures, together with the identification number of the passport enable complete identification and verification of its owner.

The procedure for the issuance of biometric foreign passports will remain not mandatory.
