Germans warned against visits to Azeri occupied land

BAKU – Germany has warned its citizens against visiting the Armenia-occupied territories of Azerbaijan, following similar warnings from other governments.

The country’s foreign ministry called upon Germans to avoid traveling to Nagorno Karabakh and seven surrounding regions. In a statement posted on its website, the ministry said there are mines in those territories and skirmishes occur on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops.

The territories in question have been under Armenian occupation since a war in the 1990s that claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about one million Azerbaijanis. A ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but peace talks have been largely fruitless so far, and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.

Berlin also discouraged German nationals from traveling to the borderline areas between the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and Armenian territory.

The statement follows Poland and Britain’s warnings to their citizens to avoid visiting Nagorno Karabakh.
