Poland warns its citizens against visits to Azeri occupied land

WARSAW – Poland’s Foreign Ministry has issued a warning to its citizens planning to visit the Armenia-occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

It said in a statement that according to international law, the Nagorno Karabakh region is part of Azerbaijan.

"Visiting the occupied territories without permission of Azerbaijani government agencies will be deemed as trespassing of the state borders of the Azerbaijan Republic," the statement said.

In December, a Polish lawmaker paid an unauthorized visit to the Nagorno Karabakh region. Tomasz Poreba, the European Parliament's rapporteur on Armenia, held meetings with the leaders of the unrecognized republic run by ethnic Armenians during the visit, which was not agreed with Baku. The move drew fire from the Azerbaijani government. The Foreign Ministry handed protest notes to the head of the European Union delegation and the Polish ambassador.

Nagorno Karabakh has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since a 1994 cease-fire ended a war that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted about one million Azerbaijanis from their homes. Years of peace talks have brought few tangible results.
