Turkish-Armenian relations: versions and reality

By Rufiz Hafizoglu

Making a statement on Turkish-Armenian relations, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the exaggeration of 1915 events seriously harms the negotiations between Ankara and Yerevan.

Davutoglu said that Ankara is interested in the development of relations with Yerevan, however, Armenia’s ineradicable memory about the 1915 events is one of the barriers.

Previously, Turkish authorities have repeatedly made gestures to Armenia for the betterment of the relations. Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s message to Armenian people on April 24, 2014 is one of such gestures.

The message said that the events of 1915 were a difficult time not only for the Armenians, but also for Arabs, Kurds and representatives of other nations living in the country.

Despite Ankara’s serious attempts, Armenia still insists on its allegations of "genocide".

It is obvious that despite all the serious efforts of Ankara, Armenian officials and Armenian diaspora, wallowing in the memory of history, will not be able to get out of this quagmire.
This leads to the assertion that relations between Turkey and Armenia, which lives with “genocide” allegations, have no future.

Despite that the relations between Ankara and Yerevan have been periodically getting artificial respiration, these relations will remain unchanged, resembling a stillborn child.

It would be interesting to know whether the relations between Ankara and Yerevan are indeed hindered by the “genocide” belief of Armenia, which wishes to scoop profit from Turkey.

When carefully analyzing the developments, one can state the fact that in reality among the reasons making it impossible to restore the relations between the parties, there is the occupation policy pursued by Armenia in the region.

Today, the Armenian authorities are trying to separate the restoration of relations between Ankara and Yerevan from the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which is quite impossible.

There are a number of reasons for this – the principal one is the fact that the unresolved Nagorno-Karabakh conflict poses a serious threat to the region.

Armenian leadership don’t understand this, though the government officials of Turkey have repeatedly officially declared about it.

The last time the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized it at a meeting with the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, which took place on January 15, 2015 in Ankara.

On the other hand, the Nagorno-Karabakh problem is just as national for Turkey, as it is for Azerbaijan. Only the nation who writes history can know what a national problem is. One of the especially highlighted moments is the fact that the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border, cooperation with the aggressor regime without solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict can be a suicide of the political elite, regardless of who is in power.

Speaking about the Armenian-Turkish relations, many pro-Armenian forces claim that the restoration of ties will be inevitable for Turkey, which is in search of new markets. This is no more than nonsense. At least because Armenia, which is in economic dependence, cannot be a market for Turkey.

Another important and eye-catching point is the importance of Baku from the political and economic point of view for Ankara.

It is not convincingly that Ankara will give preference to relations with Yerevan rather than political and economic relations with Azerbaijan and energy projects of global significance.

But these are not all obstacles hampering the restoration of the Turkish-Armenian relations. It is necessary to take into account that at present, Armenia’s ruling party has never concealed its ideology, based on Garegin Nzhdeh’s political judgment (1886-1955).

I think it would be appropriate to mention that Garegin, who is the founder of the ethnic cleansing of Azerbaijanis living in the territory of present-day Armenia in 1918-1920, had close relations with Nazi Germany. It was Garegin who went to Germany during the World War II to wear a Nazi uniform. He became a member of the Armenian National Council, established in December 1942 with the support of the Reich Minister for Eastern Region Alfred Rosenberg.

Besides using the fascist ideology, despised by the humanity, the political elite of Armenia gets special pleasure, while realizing it. Moreover, it is not a secret that those considered terrorists in many countries worldwide, are considered in Armenia as national heroes.

No matter how many steps have been taken to restore the Turkish-Armenian relations, the normalization of relations with today's reality is impossible.
