US working hard to help resolve Karabakh conflict – ambassador

The OSCE Minsk Group’s co-chairs continue to work to bring together the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict sides, the US Ambassador Robert Cekuta said in Baku July 1 at a reception on the occasion of the US Independence Day.

He said the time of the next meeting of the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia has to be agreed.

Cekuta also said that on June 30, US Secretary of State John Kerry discussed resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in phone talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.

The US is working very hard to help resolve the conflict and does this at the very high level, Cekuta noted.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
