Armenia continues to violate ceasefire with Azerbaijan

Armenian armed forces have 23 times violated the ceasefire with Azerbaijan on the line of contact over the past 24 hours, said the message of Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry May 30.

Armenian armed forces stationed on nameless heights of Armenia's Ijevan district and in the Voskevan village of Armenia's Noyemberyan district opened fire at the Azerbaijani positions located on nameless heights and in the Gushchu Ayrim village of the Gazakh district.

The Armenian side also violated ceasefire from the positions located near the Sarijali village of Azerbaijan's Aghdam district, Horadiz and Ashagi Seyidahmadli villages of the Fizuli district, and from nameless heights in the territory of Khojavand and Fizuli districts.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
