Armenians shushed under fear of punishment

The international organizations criticized the human rights situation in Armenia, which is far from being democratic.

Armenian citizens cannot trust the police, who offend and resorted to illegal activities in contacts with people, the human rights activist Zhanna Alexanyan reported.

The Human Rights Watch issued a statement demanding to denounce the arrest of activist Gevorg Safaryan and his immediate release. Safarian was detained after clashes with police in Yerevan on New Year's Eve.

Alexanyan said that in the last year international organizations made various statements regarding to the arbitrariness of the police, according to which the Armenian police was in deep crisis.

The authorities should change this situation, which seems fantastic because the government is the one who “hides” the whole law violations in sake of its interests.

The police harass and frighten Armenian citizens who try to defend their rights.

“Obviously, Gevorg Safaryan is not guilty and police actions are illegal. I am sure that he will be freed because they have no right to keep him under arrest,” Alexanyan said.

She added that it would be much better if Armenian citizens learn to submit to the court in the case of illegal police actions, and international organizations to reflect over what really should be expected during cooperating with the police.

Protection of human rights remains as one of the top problematic fields in Armenia. Influential human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the traditional violation of civil liberties in the country.

The World Report 2015 of the Human Rights Watch exposed the freedom of expression to be taken hostage by the authorities in the South Caucasus country. Pluralism lacks in Armenian broadcast media, since most of the media outlets prefer to hide the ongoing events in the country, rather than contributing to public awareness.
