People to demand change in power in Armenia

Armenia is balancing on the verge of revolution, said Deputy Chairman of Heritage party Armen Martirosyan.

Change of power is not a surprise in a country like Armenia which is bursting from protests, people’s distrust to the government and insane numbers of poverty.

Martirosyan said that people will demand the resignation of the incumbent government on the Freedom Square on December 1.

The public is sinking in rumors and protests in the post Soviet country. Popular hatred towards the authorities is on rise each day, making the revolution inevitable. "The revolution cannot be realized in one day, people at any moment can go out and demand the change of regime. Nobody wants bloodshed, and the authorities must show prudence," MP said.

The Armenian society has divided into two parts on the eve of referendum - one part plans to go to the polls to say "no" and the other part does not intend to participate in the referendum.

The Armenian National Assembly approved the constitutional reforms without any apparent reason and social requirements after several months of intense debates and political protests against it.

Under the new constitution the parliament will be able to appoint and dismiss the prime minister. The president, in his turn, who now shares his power with the prime minister, will be elected every seven years instead of five by the MPs and representatives of local authorities.

In fact, if the new Constitution is adopted, Armenia's parliament - the National Assembly - will be the most powerful branch of government in the country.

Many experts say that such a system suppresses positive sides of democratic parliamentary republic and strengthens the impact of only one party as the second round of elections will allow the stronger party to extrude weaker rivals.
