While negotiations are underway to settle the long-standing Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Armenian side continues provocations on the contact line, ignoring all calls to solve the problem peacefully.

Just days after the departure of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, whose aim is to mediate to settle the conflict peacefully, the Armenian military attempted sabotage on the frontline.

The Azerbaijani Armed Forces prevented an attempted Armenian diversion along the line of contact and border areas, the Azerbaijani defense ministry reported.

The Armenian armed attempted the incursion during the day and into the night on July 24 day by firing shells at Azerbaijani positions in the direction of the Goranboy, Aghdam, Terter and Fuzuli regions, as well as across the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border on the territory of the Gadabay region, the statement said.

The opposing side was silenced by return fire. At least five Armenian servicemen were killed.

While preventing the enemy's attempted sabotage, Azerbaijani soldier Eldar Fataliyev was killed. The Azerbaijani defense ministry expressed condolences to the relatives of the deceased soldier.

The ministry also said the situation on the frontline is in full control by the Azerbaijani armed forces.

Furthermore, the ministry rejected media reports which mentioned that allegedly 40 servicemen of Azerbaijani Armed Forces were encircled, and after a lengthy shootout, were able to break through with eight wounded soldiers.

“This information is provocative. This news purposefully spread by the secret services and hackers of Armenia don’t correspond to reality, and unfortunately, some local media, having succumbing to this lie, are bringing false information to the public,” according to the ministry..

The Armenian armed forces have increased tensions along the contact line of troops, firing frequently at Azerbaijani positions and settlements.

During the last two weeks, Armenian troops broke the ceasefire an average of 80 times a day using large-caliber machine guns and mortars.

The Azerbaijani defense ministry, commenting on the situation, earlier reported that Azerbaijani armed forces, under instructions from the defense minister, control the actions of enemy units and are ready to prevent enemy action at any time.

For over two decades, Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict which emerged over Armenia's territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor.

Since a war in the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions. A fragile ceasefire has been in place since 1994, but long-standing efforts by U.S., Russian, and French mediators have been largely fruitless so far.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on its pullout from the neighboring country's territories.
