Armenian troops start arsons in occupied territories

By Sara Rajabova

The Armenian armed forces have started to deliberately set fire to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan as the summer is nearing,.

The Armenian armed forces committed arsons in the direction of Azerbaijan’s Aghdam region on the night of May 29.

The fire, which was lit up on May 28 in the territory of Aghdam’s occupied Bash Garvend village, expanded to the neutral territory between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops and then to Aghdam’s border Orta Garvend and Chiragli villages, local media reported.

The fire brigades of the State Fire Protection Service of Azerbaijan’s Emergency Ministry were immediately involved in fire-fighting efforts in both villages.

Thanks to their efforts the fire was extinguished and residential homes, arable lands and other infrastructures were saved from the flames.

Thick smoke has been observed bellowing over those territories along the contact line on the aftermath of the fire.

Armenian armed forces frequently commit large-scale arsons in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, especially in summer.

Border villages in the Aghdam region frequently come under such destructive actions by Armenian soldiers.

In carrying out such attacks Armenia leadership of course seeks to cause harm to Azerbaijan and its people, making life at the border difficult and risky.

Rodents, infestants and poisonous snakes, which flocked to the lowland areas of the country in view of escaping the fires, enter fields and private farms during arsons, putting crops and people at risk.

Such acts of arsons have caused massive loss of natural resources, flora and fauna. Fires have also adversely affected agriculture in those villages located in the frontline area, as Armenians have deliberately set fire to those territories in the spring and summer months when crops are cultivated and harvested.

Persistent fires in the occupied territories and the protected areas along Araz River are destroying the entire plant cover. This has bitter ramifications for the environment.

To date, the territories of Agdam, Fizuli, Jabrayil, Terter and Khojavand regions, which are situated on the troops' contact line, have been set ablaze deliberately by the Armenian invaders. The fire flames encircled thousands of hectares of land falling under the control of Armenia, as well as spread over other territories and considerably damaged nature there. A total of 96,000 hectares of pastures, hayfields and greeneries as well as forest fields were destroyed and the fertile soil surface became useless.

Armenia captured Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts from Azerbaijan in a war that followed the Soviet breakup in 1991. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and nearly 1 million were displaced as a result of the war.
