Sargsyan threatens revenge on Baku

By Mushvig Mehdiyev

The very recent provocative attacks of the Armenian troops on the Azerbaijani army have resulted in a severe outbreak on the contact line, killing tens of servicemen.

As in the past, Azerbaijani armed forces, have rebuffed the attempted sabotage raids by the Armenian army.

Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry announced the deaths of 17 Armenian soldiers and of 20 injured throughout this January. Nevertheless, Armenian authorities have only reported the loss of 10 soldiers in the same time period.

Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan, spoke about the recent army losses at a meeting dedicated to the 23rd anniversary of the Armenian army on January 26. More exactly, he addressed the event to recall the past and vow to revenge, saying Azerbaijanis will pay a high price for the life of each Armenian soldier.

“I think, no one doubts that the Azerbaijanis will pay a high price for the life of each of our guys," he said. "They are paying this high price today and will pay it in the future.”

Sargsyan's appeal appeared amid ongoing peace process supported by the international community in an effort to find the soonest resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which emerged due to Armenia's territorial claims against neighboring Azerbaijan.

Armenia continues to occupy over 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory.

Armenia continues to ignore the international community's calls to withdraw from Azerbaijani lands and regularly breaches the truce.

In his call for vengeance the Armenian president seems to have forgotten the illegal incursion of an Armenian combat helicopter into Azerbaijan's airspace just a while after the meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart in Paris. Sargsyan pledged to stay committed to a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Paris on the one hand and on the other hand a helicopter of the Armenian armed forces conducted a provocative flight over the occupied Azerbaijani territories. A disaccord between the president's words and army's actions may well prove the lack of Armenia's unanimous stance on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

A question often asked by Azerbaijani officials in Baku is to what extend does the Armenian army obey its commander in chief? Or does the commander fail to command his army?

In his "historic" appeal Sargsyan confessed superiority of the modern Azerbaijani Army over the Armenian military, stating that "nearly 25 years ago we were superior to the Azerbaijani army on the battlefield."

Sargsyan avoided comparing the modern Armenian army to its neighbor's armed forces.

Global Firepower, a center providing a unique analytical display of data concerning today's world military power, failed to include Armenia in its most recent report on the military strengths of the world's nations. Armenia was not shown in the report two years in a row, while Azerbaijan was ranked 50th among 106 countries.

The Armenian leader did not regard Azerbaijan as a reasonable opponent and remained somewhat belligerent.

"With an unreasonable opponent we ought to and will surely compel it to peace,” he said.

Such destructive position undermines peace talks mediated by OSCE Minsk Group and hinders the solution of the conflict as a result of which over 1 million Azerbaijani are obliged to live as refugees and IDPs.
