Polish expert: Sargsyan's attempt to retain power possible only through bloodshed

By Rashid Shirinov

Today, the population of Armenia and members of the Armenian lobby are concerned about President Sargsyan’s potential attempt to assume the post of prime minister in April 2018. This is quite a possible scenario, since the current head of state will most be most likely unwilling to leave power upon the expiry of his presidential term.

Armenia has no future without a change in the system of power, says the famous Polish political scientist and publicist Jakub Korejba.

“If Sargsyan decides to prolong the existence of the current system and changes the president's post for the position of prime minister, thus retaining control of the political process, the country will inevitably and permanently slide into poverty and dictatorship,” the expert noted in his interview with Day.az on January 17.

Korejba holds an opinion that Sargsyan can stay in power only through bloodshed and people understand this perfectly. The political scientist noted two possible options for maintaining stability in Armenia: either a change of power or a forceful suppression of the public discontent.

The Armenians suffer from plight due to the incapable authorities, who are not yet able to fix the problems of the country and its population. The state debt is approaching $7 billion but there is no sign of improvement in the life of Armenians, the unemployment rate is around 18 percent, almost a third of the population lives in poverty – there are only few of the problems the Armenian citizens face.

People periodically hold protests demanding from the government to solve the economic and, first of all, social problems in the country. However, the authorities continue to close their eyes to these issues.

Korejba said that social tension in Armenia is heating up, and within the current system, there is no opportunity to push the country to development, so the poverty and despair of the Armenian people will only deepen.

“As a result of the long-term rule of Sargsyan’s clique, which views power as an enrichment tool and despises the development of the country, the economic and social situation of the population is on the verge of an explosion," the expert noted.

He added that both in foreign and domestic politics, the power drove the country into a trap, and in fact all citizens of Armenia are hostage to the interests of Sargsyan and his clan. The political scientist noted that the Armenian population should somehow find the strength to get rid of this corrupt clique, which is going to continue to plunder the country.

Thus, Armenians have left a couple of months before it becomes clear whether the population will continue to suffer from plight or it will finally head towards the bright future that the current authorities have been deceitfully promising them for many years.
