Dressed in black, to signify mourning, a soloist played the melancholy melodies of her homeland – Azerbaijan – in commemoration of the occupied Gubadli region.

Gubadli fell under Armenian occupation 24 years ago on August 31, 1993, during the invasion of Nagorno-Karabakh and the seven surrounding regions.

Rising above the hubbub of the London streets, the timbre of the violin soared like the sound of a human voice at the touch of the deft fingers of the musician.

Despite the right to peacefully demonstrate on the streets of London being enshrined in UK law, one Armenian diplomat emerged from inside the Embassy and objected noisily – at one stage even reaching out as though to grab the violin.

After the head of the London Office of the European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS), Jack Pegoraro, explained about the remembrance, the Armenian diplomat disputed the occupation of Azerbaijani territory by the armed forces of his country and carried out his threat to call the police.

The policeman who responded to the complaint understood the nature of the demonstration, replying: “This is the UK – you have a perfect right to a peaceful protest.”

"The performance of Bayaty-Shiraz and Sari Gelin by a woman who wears black clothes, whose face is closed, is dedicated to the Azerbaijanis killed and expelled from their native land. In front of the Armenian embassy, we want to remind Armenians that Azerbaijan will never reconcile with the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions,” Pegoraro said.

About 30,000 people were living in Gubadli before the Armenian troops occupied the region on the last day of 1993 summer.

The Armenian armed forces besieged the region after the occupation of Lachin, Kalbajar, Agdam, Fuzuli and Jabrayil regions.

About 283 volunteers from Gubadli heroically died while defending their region from the Armenian invasion, and seven of them were awarded high title Azerbaijani National Hero for their valor in defending their motherland.

The Armenian invasion resulted in destruction of thousands of public facilities in Gubadli. As many as 21 secondary and 26 incomplete secondary schools, 15 primary schools, four hospitals and 33 health centers, 111 cultural and educational institutions, including 60 libraries, ten cultural centers, 28 cultural clubs, and many other facilities were seized and demolished.

Today, all 93 villages of Gubadli region are under the control of the enemy troops. Every family from Gubadli has suffered from the horror committed by the Armenian armed forces in the region.
