UN predicts Armenia to become empty by 2100

By Rashid Shirinov

Not so long ago, the Armenian president promised that the country’s population will be 4 million by 2040. However, the newly-released report by the UN has totally refuted Sargsyan’s expectations.

The population of Armenia will be about 2.7 million people in 2050, which is by 10 percent less than the current figure, according to the report by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs' Population Division.

The current population of Armenia is 2.93 million people, the report reads. Moreover, Armenia's population will decrease to 1,849,000 by 2100.

It is noteworthy that that this forecast by the UN is based on the official statistical data of Armenia. Meanwhile, unofficial sources claim that the situation is worse, adding that currently the population of this country barely exceeds 2 million. This figure together with the lower demographic figures and strengthening migration suggest that less than a million people will live in the country by the end of the century.

Armenia faces a number of problems – unemployment, corruption, inflation, huge debts, low foreign investment, falling exports and many others. Naturally, all this scares the Armenians – that’s why they do not want to stay in the country, and seek any opportunity to leave abroad forever.

Back in 1991, the population of Armenia was about 3.6 million, but the situation has extremely aggravated after the Soviet breakup. Due to the government failures, socio-economic problems and poor prospects of living in Armenia, many of the country’s population decided to leave abroad.

Moreover, the birth rate is falling every year in Armenia. The official data shows that the birth rate in Armenia for the first 3 months of this year decreased by 6.5 percent as compared to the data of 2016, while the mortality rate jumped by 3.8 percent. Due to the social and economic problems in the country, people in Armenia cannot afford to have children.

Thus, Armenia has quite poor demographic prospects and the report by UN has once again confirmed that.
