Armenian armed units continue to violate ceasefire with Azerbaijan

The Armenian armed units violated ceasefire with Azerbaijan a total of 115 times throughout the day, using 60 and 120 millimeter mortars (32 shells), large-calibre artillery, Azerbaijan`s Defense Ministry reported on May 18.

Armenian armed forces, located on Dovekh village and nameless hills in Noyemberyan region, on nameless hills in Ijevan region, in Mosesgekh, Chinari village in Berd region and on nameless hills in Krasnoselsk region subjected to fire the positions of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces located in Kamarli, Bala Jafarli villagees in Gazakh region, in Munjuglu, Kokhanebi, Alibayli village in Tovuz region and in Garaveliler village and on nameless hills in Gadabay region.

The positions of Azerbaijani Armed Forces were also fired from positions of Armenian military units located near the occupied Goyarkh village in Tartar region, Javahirli, Sarijali, Yusifjanli, Marzili villages of Aghdam region, Kuropatkino village of Khojavend region, Gorgan, Garakhanbayli, Horadiz, Ashaghi Veysalli and Ashagi Seyidahmadli villages of Fuzuli region, as well as from positions located on nameless hills in Goranboy, Tartar, Aghdam, and Khojavend regions.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
