Armenian troops breach truce with Azerbaijan

The Armenian armed units shattered ceasefire with Azerbaijan a total of 31 times throughout the day, Azerbaijan`s Defense Ministry reported on February 21.

The Armenian armed forces, stationed in Armenia`s Voskevan village and nameless hills in Noyemberyan district, Berkaber village in Ijevan district, Chinari village in Berd district subjected to fire the positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces located in Gushchu Ayrim, Kamarli and Gizilhajili villages in Gazakh district and Aghbulag village in Tovuz district.

The ceasefire was also violated in Kuropatkino village in Khojavand district, Garakhanbayli and Ashagi Seyidahmadli villages in Fuzuli district, as well as nameless hills in Goranboy, Khojavand, Fuzuli and Jabrayil districts.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
