Azerbaijan draws attention to Armenian aggression at UN Human Rights Council

The United Nations Human Rights Council has completed its general debate on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms of intolerance on September 27.

The general debate started on September 26, during which Azerbaijani speakers spoke about the tolerance in Azerbaijan, stressing that the country is a unique place where the west and east intersect and cultures harmoniously complement each other.

The speakers said also that because of Armenia’s military aggression, a part of Azerbaijan’s territory remains under occupation, and about one million Azerbaijanis remain in the status of refugees and internally displaced persons.

Azerbaijan called on Armenia to end the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh, said Azerbaijani speakers during the debate. “As for the allegations of discrimination, Azerbaijanis were expelled from Nagorno-Karabakh, whereas Armenians continue to live in Azerbaijan.”

Armenia continues also to glorify terrorists and use terrorist organizations for subversive actions against Azerbaijan, noted the speakers. “If Armenia does not end its policy of aggression, the consequences for that country will be terrible.”

Instead of protecting its citizens, the Armenian leadership continues to incite war and aggression and propagate dangerous ideas of hatred not only against Azerbaijan, but also to other countries of the region, the Azerbaijani speakers stressed.

“Racial superiority and hatred is Armenia’s state policy,” they added.

Armenia broke out a lengthy war against Azerbaijan laying territorial claims on its South Caucasus neighbor. Since a war in the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding districts.

Due to the ethnic cleansing policy carried out by Armenia and the Armenian occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions of Azerbaijan, the number of refugees and internally displaced persons hit more than 1.2 million.

With a population of over 9.6 million, Azerbaijan is among the countries carrying the highest IDP caseload in the world in per capita terms.
